Conservation Organizations in Nigeria Living Earth Nigeria Living Earth Nigeria Foundation was established in February 1998, with programs in Bayelsa and is located in the Niger Delta, on the southern coast of Nigeria. The mangrove forest of the Delta is the largest in Africa and the third largest in the world. It is one of the most important areas in Nigeria, in terms of biodiversity. The Niger Delta is also the source of oil, which provides Nigeria with 90% of its foreign exchange earnings and 80% of the Federal government’s revenue. Oil exploration, large-scale agriculture, up-stream dams on the River Niger and other human activities are degrading the aquatic resources, plants and animals of the Niger Delta. This has impacted the livelihood of the communities of the Delta, which depend on these resources. In addition, many communities in the Delta lack basic amenities such as schools, health facilities, electricity or running water and there are few opportunities for employment. Cross River’s communities depend on forest products for their livelihood. However, these forest products are being harvested at an unsustainable rate. The solution to this is for the communities to take a long-term approach to natural resource management, which balances community forestry with good agricultural practice. Living Earth Nigeria is working in Bayelsa State and
Cross River State and has its head office in Port Harcourt. The field office for
the Cross River State program is in Calabar.

Contributing to the management of protected areas. The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), a private non-profit organization, was established in 1982, and actively promotes all aspects of conservation in the country (Anadu and Green, 1990). NCF is active in conducting baseline surveys of representative game reserves, providing funds and support for conservation projects, and in 1985, assisted the Federal Department of Forestry in drawing up a national conservation strategy (Anadu, 1987; Ebin, 1983; UNEP-WCMC, 1988). In collaboration with IUCN % The UNEP World Conservation Union, African Wildlife Federation, International Council for Bird Protection (ICBP) and Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) efforts have been focused on the conservation of important wetland habitats (UNEP-WCMC, 1988). WWF-UK has been active in the preparation and implementation of management plans for the recently established Cross River National Park.
